| Small Mountain Quarry is operated by Slusser Brothers, a subsidiary of Pennsy Supply. The quarry employs 150 workers, from engineers to truck drivers to equipment operators. In 2006, Small Mountain Quarry purchased $11 million in goods and services from vendors throughout Luzerne County.
The quarry produces materials that are used by contractors throughout Luzerne County to build and repair roads and bridges. If the quarry is forced to close, those costs for materials would likely increase as contractors would have to travel farther for them. That increase would likely be passed on to the taxpayers in Luzerne County. There are asphalt manufacturing and ready-mix concrete plants at the quarry.
The property is zoned for industrial use, which includes mining. Company officials point out that the environmental impact would be much greater if the company were forced to find a new location for a quarry, rather than this existing site.
